Many Hikvision cameras come with the functionality of motion detection. Motion detection means that the CCTV camera sends an alert and starts recording the video of the camera field of view whenever there is a motion in the field. While this feature reduces storage bandwidth as well as data transfer bandwidth in case of IP camera, there can be false motion detection alerts.
Let us say that we are interested in people coming to the door front where there is a CCTV camera installed with motion detection alert setting. This would trigger an alert whenever someone comes and stands in front of the door. But with the basic settings of the camera, the camera would generate alerts and start recording if there are leaves moving in front of the door or the shadows of clouds moving in the field of view of the camera. This would increase the bandwidth of storage and data transfer, apart from being irritating. You might think that the 'basic event' settings are sufficient. It does allow adjusting the sensitivity level. In 'expert mode' you can provide different settings for day time and night time and even allows setting the minimum size of the object.
But these settings are not enough. You will still get a false alarm when an insect moves in front of the camera. The basic mode is just as its name says, very basic. It uses a simple computer algorithm to check two frames and find out if there has been any change in them. The same settings that work in the daytime wouldn't work so well in the night.
The solution to these problems lies in the advanced motion detection events. Most Hikvision cameras come with advanced settings of Intrusion Detection and Line Crossing Detection. We will now see how to adjust these settings to eliminate false alerts while never missing a real alert.
Intrusion Detection
The basic concept behind intrusion detection system is that a real intruder would approach and enter a specific area in the field of view instead of the entire screen. To setup intrusion detection 4 different parameters needs to be set. They are the area of the screen, the time for which the intruder is there(threshold), sensitivity and size of object as a percentage of the detection area. At first this may sound very challenging to setup. But you have to follow a very simple technique to arrive at the right settings.

Leave the camera on basic event settings for a few days. This will give you enough data to analyze. Separate the motion detection alerts by those from real people and the false alerts. You will find upon analyzing the real people triggered data, which is the actual area that needs to be set for detection as well as the dwell time and percentage of total area(a rough estimate would do). The difficult part is the sensitivity. You can start with a sensitivity of 30.
Line Crossing Detection
Line crossing detection is the event where an intruder crosses a predefined line in a particular direction. You may wonder why this smart event is needed as intrusion detection may seem sufficient. But consider a situation where a mischievous child (read perpetrator) comes in front of the door, rings the bell and then darts out of the scene before the dwell time(threshold) is over. In such case Intrusion Detection would fail. To detect a perpetrator like this one a line crossing detection is needed. You need to define the line that needs to be crossed to trigger the alert, the direction in which the line crossing takes place and sensitivity. Narrowing down the conditions helps detect this kind of activity more efficiently than the Intrusion Detection would.
